Iran to establish regional music centers in two provinces

JNN 05 May 2011 TEHRAN — Two regional music centers are to be set up in the two provinces of Sistan-Baluchestan and Golestan in the future, the executive manager of the 7th Regional Music Festival, Ali Torabi announced on Tuesday.

Torabi gave some details about the festival in a press conference held here on Tuesday. The festival will be running from May 14 to 18 in Tehran and Kerman.

“Regional music is mingled with Iranian culture and identity but unfortunately, it has been overshadowed by pop and rock music over the past few years. I believe these programs can revive Persian regional music once again, he said.

The other point is that the investors show less interest in regional music, leaving regional music to fall into a decline, he added

“We have plans to establish more centers in the coming years but the two provinces will surely have centers by the end of this year,” he said.

Secretary of the event Jahangir Nasr Ashrafi continued to say that the festival this year contains four sections.

“The first section covers performances by older singers who have never taken part in any festivals before.

“Several workshops are also arranged at the University of Tehran during the festival in which regional music along with live performances are scheduled,” Nasr Ashrafi said.

The House of Music will be hosting a conference on the structure of music, and Vahdat Hall will be playing host to the performances.

He also said that a research team is organized to conduct research on the literature of regional music, the results of which would be published on a book.

Over 180 musicians are attending the festival. A folklore music band from Scandinavia is expected to give a performance at the festival, he remarked.

Vahdat Hall, Rudaki Hall, House of Music, and Faculty of Fine Arts in Tehran as well as two halls in Kerman will be hosting the event.

Iranian-based Kazakh dotar player Mostafa Qazaq and 117-year-old tanbur player Seyyed Qadamyar Hosseini are two of the participant at the festival who be giving solo performances.
