YoP Hold rallies in Karachi , Lahore , Islamabad to Protest over the Closure of Only Land Route to Parachinar

JNN 11 May 2011 : Demonstrations in Different Cities of Pakistan were held by the YOUTH OF PARACHINAR (YoP) , to highlight the closure of the Thall Parachinar Road , which has been under siege by the terrorist of Tehrik e Taliban Pakistan for the last Four years , and the Pakistani Government looks like helpless and ineffiecient in combating with these terrorists , or either  they have taken side with these terrorists , as the Miseries of the People of the Kurram Agency are getting from Bad to worse .

Frustrated by lawmakers and politicians’ apathy and enraged by the negligence and indifference of the government and security apparatus, scores of youth and children from Parachinar held a protest march on Monday against the continuing siege of their town and killings of innocent commuters by militants.

Carrying coffins bearing the names of people brutally killed by extremists on their shoulders, the protesters marched from National Press Club to parliament house where the lower house was in session. The most noticeable thing in the rally, held on the 19th consecutive day of their peaceful protest, was the sight of young children wearing white shrouds

According to a press release issued on Monday by the youth of Parachinar, all the protesters were demanding was for the government to clear and open the Thal-Parachinar Road, which has been blocked for the last four years, and the continuing blockage of the road has created a plethora of problems for the people of the area.

The protesters were chanting slogans against Interior Minister Rehman Malik, who had promised to re-open the blocked road by April 27, but after almost two weeks, the road remains blocked and not a single one of the promised security measures promised by Malik have been followed through.

Majlis Wahdat Muslimeen Deputy Secretary and a scholar Ameen Shaheedi addressed the protesters, saying, “An area where 500,000 people reside cannot be closed off for such a long time by any militant terrorist group. If supplies cannot reach there and the people cannot travel safely, the government has to take serious concern of the matter.” The Chairman of Youth of Parachinar Ali Shah Kazmi led the rally to Parliament House

The demonstration by students from Parachinar in Islamabad against the continued closure of the Thall-Parachinar Road has drawn attention to an issue of crucial significance to the people of the Upper Kurram Agency. Till now, despite some attempts by legislators from the area to raise the matter in parliament, no one appears to have paid any heed to the situation.

Sadly, this is a situation people know well. The Thall-Parachinar Road had remained closed for four years, until in February this year the government had, with considerable pride, announced its reopening following meetings between tribal elders, administration members and others presided over by Interior Minister Rehman Malik. Astonishingly enough, the local Taliban had said they would ensure the deal was kept. But neither the government nor the militants’ word held true. In mid-March, passengers travelling down the highway from Parachinar were kidnapped (they were all Shia); their bodies were discovered a short while later and the road closed again on March 25 amid fears of renewed sectarian clashes. Since then, the road has remained closed.

.However, he has not given any administrative order for opening the road,” Chairman of Youth of Parachinar Ali Shah Kazimi said while addressing the rally at the D-Chowk Parliament house. He said that the reasons are unknown but the interior minister has been making the same announcements for many months.

All protesters were demanding the Government and members of National Assembly to clear and open the Thal-Parachinar road which is closed to the residents of upper Kurrum, only.

“The travellers of upper Kurrum are kidnapped, maimed and killed at this road and the forces are stationed just few kilometres on both sides,” Ali Kazmi said.

Deputy Secretary, Majlis Wahdat Muslimeen Pakistan, Allama Ameen Shaheedi said that half a million residents of Parachinar are living in siege by the Taliban, and all the essential commodities including food, fuel and medicines are supplied from Afghanistan to the area.

“Even the residents have to travel to Afghanistan to come to Peshawar,” he said adding “this is a matter of shame for the managers of the state.”

The speakers said that the life has been made miserable for the masses, the economy has ruined, educational career of students spoiled, there is shortage of daily essential commodities, hospitals lack the medicines, patients were dying and were being exploited due to closure of one and only Tall-Parachinar road, which connects the Kurram Agency with Peshawar.

The speakers said that the army stationed in Parachinar should be made responsible for securing the road between Peshawar and Parachinar.

The speakers said that the road was almost 250 kilometres from Peshawar to Parachinar but the troubled spot was only a patch of 25-30 kilometres near Tal, and the kidnappings of Parachinar passengers continue despite the agreements between warring tribes to open up the road, which have been guaranteed by the government of Pakistan.

Karachi Protest Rally

The Youth of Parachanar (YoP), an organisation of the Kurram Agency-Parachanar . Youths living in Karachi staged protest demonstration On Monday , in front of Karachi Press Club (KPC)against the 4 years-long siege by the Taliban. The large number of students of various universities and colleges of Karachi hailing from Kurram Agency gathered outside KPC, the participants carried placards inscribed with slogans and chanted against Taliban, and the ruling PPP government over their discriminated behavior with the people of Parachanar.

The rally started from Purani Numaish and ended at the Karachi Press Club where a large number of law enforcers cordoned off the entire area and blocked the road leading to the Governor’s House. The water cannon carriage was also posted to disperse the protesters.

However, the youths peacefully scattered after their demonstration. The road leading to the KPC apparently was also under siege, as neither vehicles nor the pedestrians were allowed to move in by the LEA deployed on the arterial avenue.

The youth demanded of the Government and the Pakistan Army to immediately establish the writ of the government and take immediate action against the American sponsored Tehrik e Taliban to end the four year-long besiege of Parachanar-Kurram Agency.

Addressing the protestors, YoP Karachi chairman Zamin Abbas, and Abbas Ali Turi said that the Taliban terrorists had besieged Kurram Agency-Parachinar for the last four years.

They demanded of president, prime minister, Army chief, SC Chief Justice and other leaders to play their due roles in ending the years long besiegement of the area.

LAHORE PROTEST RALLY

On 9TH May A protest demonstration, launched under the aegis of the Youth of Parachinar, entered its 13th day on Sunday. The campaign is seeking early resolution of the problems of the Parachinar residents.
The participants of the protest were carrying placards and banners reading slogans such as “Is Parachinar not a part of Pakistan”?

Leader of YoP Hussain Bangish, addressing the participants, said that if the government did not pay any heed towards their demands the YoP would march towards Islamabad.
The participants of the demonstration demanded the Pakistan government to manage the release of 33 hostages of Parachinaar from Taliban.
The government should implement the Murree Accord in a true spirit and violators of the agreement should be punished, he further urged. The protesters demanded the government and the establishment not to back the traitor Taliban , while they have to take the patriotic Toori and Bangash tribes in their confidence.
The PIA services should be started on emergency basis and also Kurram militia needs to be brought back to Kurram Agency. They also demanded the reopening of Tal-Parachinar road and army check posts should be established, at distance of 1 kilometer each, on the road to ensure safe traveling of people.
They further added that “When the Taliban were defeated, they blocked they main Tal-Parachinar Road and started targeting the Shia passengers travelling to Peshawar and other parts of the country. The miscreants killed hundreds of passengers on this road and also made them hostages and brutally killed them after long imprisonments. When these incidents of killing, kidnapping and looting convoys occurred again and again, the people started to go to Peshawar via Afghanistan. But later on, the government sealed the Pak-Afghan border due to security concerns and the people of the Upper Kurram were besieged there,” the protest leader said.

He further told the participants that later on an agreement was inked between the tribal elders and the Taliban, with the help of then government, at Murree in 2008. “But the government failed to implement the Murree Accord,” he said.
Then the government again called on a grand Jirga comprising some 50 members, including the Taliban. Interior Minister Rehman Malik was also a part of the peace accord, he said. This was also violated by Taliban stationed at Bagan Lower Kurram. Though this peace agreement was warmly welcomed by Shia and Sunni tribes and were considering a hope towards peace and harmony. It was violated at least 13 times by Wahabi terrorists but the last violation resulted in a huge loss i.e. dozens of people were killed and 41 were kidnapped, said Bangish.
