Ukrainian Capital Kiev marks Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Birthday

JNN 09 Jan 2012 Kiev : Ukrainian Muslims have gathered in the country’s capital of Kiev to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Press  reports.

Ukrainian Muslims commemorated the anniversary by holding ceremonies such as Quran recitations and presenting lectures on the significant events of the Prophet’s life.

About sixty thousand Muslims live, work and practice their religion in Kiev along with another two million throughout Ukraine.

Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia and received his first revelation from God through the Angel Gabriel at the age of forty.

Shia Muslims celebrate his birth anniversary on the 17th of Rabi’ al-awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar, while the Sunnis celebrate it on the 12th day of the same month.

Iranians hold celebrations from 12 to 17 of Rabi’ al-awwal to respect both denominations.
