JNN 08 June 2013 Karachi : Two young men received death sentences on Friday over a fatal shooting that exposed class divisions in Pakistan and led to an unusual social media campaign demanding that the country’s rich and powerful be held accountable.
The suspects, Shahrukh Jatoi and Nawab Siraj Talpur, come from two of the wealthiest families in Karachi, a violent metropolis of more thatn 20 million people on Pakistan’s southern coast.
They were convicted of killing 20-year-old Shahzeb Khan one late night in December after the university student had an argument with one of Talpur’s servants. As Shahrukh was teasing and following the sister of Shahzeb in a Marriage Ceremony.
Khan’s family would likely have had little chance of getting justice in the past, though his father is Himself a mid-ranking police officer. Pakistan’s police and judges are notoriously corrupt and are often swayed by pressure from the country’s elite.
After Shahzeb Khan’s death, His father being himself a Police Officer could not have the FIR registered against the sons of the Filthy Rich , Jatoi’s and Talpur , so his father called his wife’s brother-in-law, Nabeel Gabool, a member of the National Assembly, who said he had difficulty getting the police to register a case against the accused — an allegation denied by the police.
But as in an Interview given By Nabeel Gabol to the Local Media , he even being on the Political front and even being Member of National Assembly, faced difficulties in helping to registering a case against the Sons of the Powerful Pakistani Elite, as then he also has to take the blessing of a Party Chief of the Local Political Party , and as with his help some demonstrations and Protest were Lodged in different Places , and as awareness was even given to the Middle Class People , so with all this effort , a simple first step was taken by the Top Most Position of Judiciary in Pakistan , and thus the case was registered and with the involvement of the CJ , the criminals were arrested and were brought to face the Judicial system.
But powerful Pakistanis and their offspring are now faced with a growing cadre of citizens — often middle class or upper middle class — who are increasingly fighting them with the help of the Internet, an activist Supreme Court and prominent political figures seeking to harness their anger.
Activists in Karachi sprang into action over Khan’s death, holding protests, using Twitter and setting up a Facebook page, “In memory of Shahzeb Khan,” to get word out about the case. Some of the protests were organized by the party of politician Imran Khan, a former cricket star.
Eventually, the Supreme Court demanded that police arrest the suspected killers in 24 hours, seize their property and freeze their bank accounts. Police detained Jatoi, Talpur, his brother Sajjad Talpur and his servant Mustafa Lashari. Jatoi was nabbed in Dubai, where he had tried to escape.
After the court announced its verdict and sentence Friday, Pakistani TV channels aired video showing Jatoi making a victory sign and smiling as police pushed him toward a prison van.
The waving of the Convicted Criminals with a V sign shows that , Even being convicted and sentenced to Capital Punishment the Convicts are quite sure that they ll get the relief , as their Powerful and filthy Rich Parents ,will have some sort of deal with either the Judiciary or the Political set up , and they ll either be Pardoned , or their sentence will be relaxed by the higher Judiciary .
Defense lawyer Hummol Zubedi confirmed the court’s decision but said that the defendants would appeal it. He added that the other two suspects were sentenced to life in prison.
Although Pakistan has many people on death row, the sentences are rarely carried out. Also, a life term usually translates to around 14 years in prison.
In a tearful interview broadcast on Pakistani TV channels, Khan’s mother, Ambreen Aurangzeb, said she was satisfied with the court ruling, but added, “I miss my son day and night, and this court order cannot bring him back.
Witht the Corrupt Judicial sytem and LEA’s in Pakistan , it is very rare to see , a wealthy and Powerful men any type of Punishment , rather Capital Punishment , But as Pakistani Public has also become more Unrestive over the corruption and Nepotism, and due to the awareness of the Local Media and above all the Social Media , they have also become a little more vigilante against the crimes of the Rich and Powerful, and this is because of their growing concern over the High level of Corruption , and Power Brokerage by the Rich and the Powerful , that now they also some time and for some causes come on the roads and ask for Justice and Equality , for all the Citizens of Pakistan.
The level of Corruption and Injustice is upto such a level , that even Pakistan at the Epic Center of Terrorism of the World , and center of terrorist Networks like Taliban , Al Qaida ,and their allied Groups like Sipah e Sahaba Pakistan ( SSP ) , Tehrik e Taliban Pakistan ( TTP) , Lashkar e Jhangvi (LeJ) and many other operating freely in Pakistan , and till now No Terrorist have been even awarded Capital Punishment , and even if any body has been even awarded Capital Punishment , even then the Punishment has not been executed , due to Political and International Pressures , as the Sponsors of these terrorism are Saudi Arabia , Persian Gulf states and US , but again these International Players of terrorism in Pakistan , Put their Political Pressure , and at the same time Bribe the Corrupt Judicial and LEAs and as a result the terrorist are escorted free of Jails , Waving Victory signs and encouraging other Terrorist that if you are in their Network then you are above the Law .
