After Qusayr Syrian troops re-capture, adjoining villages and recaptures Golan Heights Crossing while US troops deployed along Jordan border

syrian Forces Captures Golan Crossing , while US Troops on Jordan BordersJNN 10 June 2013 Syrian troops, backed by Hezbollah fighters, pressed on with their offensive on Friday in the country’s militant heartland, taking two small villages near strategic town Qusayr that was captured by the government this week. While on the other side Syrian forces liberated the Quneitra Crossing – situated between Syria and the Golan Heights – after heavy clashes with the terrorist of anti-government gunmen.

Following Wednesday’s capture of Qusayr, the Syrian Army appears to have turned their sights to driving rebels from the country’s densely populated heartland, including the cities of Homs and Aleppo, The Associated Press reported.

Government forces faced little resistance on Friday as they took control of the central villages of Salhiyeh and Masoudiyeh, the state SANA news agency said.

The push brought President Bashar al-Assad’s troops and their Hezbollah allies to the edge of al-Buwaida village, where rebels who withdrew from Qusayr took up positions and regrouped. On Thursday, the rebels also lost the nearby village of Dabaa.

Casualties from Friday’s clashes were not immediately known but the past three weeks of fierce fighting have left dozens of rebels, troops and Hezbollah fighters dead.

Since joining the battle in Qusayr in full force in April, the Lebanese Resistance Movement Hezbollah has helped tip the balance of power to Assad’s side, enabling the government to take most of the towns and villages near the border with Lebanon.

Syrian state TV reported on Friday that troops are chasing rebels in al-Buwaida.

Syrian troops backed by Hezbollah fighters entered Qusayr from several directions on May 19 after weeks of clashes with militants.

Qusayr has been an important center and supply route for the foreign-sponsored militants fighting against the Syrian government.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos in the country is being orchestrated from outside, and that the militants are supported by the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Several international human rights organizations have said that the militants are committing war crimes.

Syrian army troops have established control over a key crossing in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights shortly after it fell into the hands of foreign-backed militants.

On Thursday, Syrian forces liberated the Quneitra Crossing – situated between Syria and the Golan Heights – after heavy clashes with anti-government gunmen.

Earlier in the day, Israeli media reported that foreign-backed militants had seized the crossing.

Meanwhile, Austria has announced that it will withdraw its peacekeepers from the UN monitoring force on the Golan Heights in wake of ongoing battles in the area.

Austrians account for about 380 of the 1,000-strong United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), and their departure will deal a serious blow to the mission.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967, when it also took control of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

It annexed the Golan Heights in 1981, although the move was never recognized by the international community and was a violation of international law.

The Israeli regime has used various means to help the foreign-sponsored militants in Syria, including the provision of medical assistance.

Also on Thursday, the Syrian troops recaptured the town of al-Daba’a. This came after the Army liberated the strategic town of Qusayr on Wednesday following three weeks of fighting with the militants.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

US Marines have reportedly been deployed along Jordan border with Syria as the Syrian Army continues to inflict heavy losses on foreign-backed militants.

Over 1,000 US troops, who had arrived in the Jordanian port of Aqaba via Israel earlier in the week, have headed toward the kingdom’s border area with Syria under heavy Jordanian military escort, Israeli sources reported on Friday.

The troops are reported to be members of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Force.

Washington and Amman have imposed a news blackout on the deployment of US troops on Jordanian soil.

US sources have confirmed that the presence of the Marines in Jordan has nothing to do with military drills set to be held between American and Jordanian troops later this month.

In April, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Washington is sending 200 troops to Jordan to help contain the violence in Syria, increasing speculation that US is setting the stage for intervention in the Arab country.

At the time, Russia criticized the deployment of US troops to Jordan over the Syrian crisis, describing the move as an unconstructive step that threatens to expand the conflict.

Jordan’s opposition party, the Islamic Action Front, also denounced the presence of American troops in the kingdom and asked the government to review its decision to authorize the deployment of foreign troops on Jordan’s soil.
