JNN 25 Dec 2013 KARACHI: As Pakistanis observed the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) on Tuesday, a total of four people were killed and at least 17 injured in multiple bomb explosions in Karachi Our Correspondent reported.
Blanket security thrown around Chehlum-related processions and events helped avoid any major incident after reports from intelligence agencies had warned of possible violence in various parts of the country.
The Chehlum is an observance that occurs 40 days after Ashura and is marked by Mourning processions.
The Pakistani government suspended mobile services in 56 cities to ensure tightened security.
Karachi , Sindh
Only Karachi witnessed several serious incidents.
Earlier, in Karachi, Twin blasts in Orangi Town took four lives and injuring 21.
The First blast occurred at the Wall of the Imambargah Kausar in Orangi Town No. 10 with No Casualties while the Second Blast occurred after about 10 Mins when the area Public and rescue workers arrived ,due to which three Persons lost their lives and 21 injured. The deceased include a man named Irfan and 15-year-old boy named Sunny. While a Sub Inspector was also among the Injured. A rescue ambulance was also destroyed in the blasts.
According to initial details, timed-devices were used for the explosion.
A few rescue officials were also left injured when the second blast took place near the gate of the Imam bargah Kausar , while they were carrying out relief activities.
The security arrangements in tension-ridden Rawalpindi made possible an incident-free procession, which activists of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat had threatened to disrupt.
Except for a few incidents of clashes between police and troublemakers in different parts of Rawalpindi, no major incident was reported from anywhere, much to the relief of a jittery populace which had experienced a two-day curfew for the first time in their life after a sectarian clash on the Ashura day last month. At least 12 people died in the clash.
Unlike previous years, the authorities were more concerned about security on the Chehlum day because of the recent incidents of sectarian killings in different parts of the country. The ISPR had announced on Monday that 10,000 army men had been deployed in sensitive regions of the country for Chehlum duty.
The routes of main mourning processions in almost every city, particularly in sensitive ones like Rawalpindi and Karachi, had been sealed even a day before.
As part of security measures, mobile phone services were suspended in a number of cities for almost the whole day.
Meanwhile, the Sindh home ministry has extended a ban on pillionriding in Karachi till midnight on Wednesday.
Rawal Pindi , Punjab
The main procession was taken out from Imambargah Col Maqbool Hussain College Road, from the area of Police Station (PS) City, which was joined by a number of small processions that were brought out from Imambargah Hifazat Ali Shah (Bohar Bazaar), Imambargah Ashiq Hussain (Taili Mohala), Imambargah Biltistania and Imambargah Shahchan Chirag enlarging the size of main procession.
Later, the main procession culminated at Imambargah Qadeemi after preceding its traditional routes Fawara Chowk, Sarafa Bazaar and Raja Bazaar.
Similarly, a procession appeared from Imambargah Bilitistania that ended at Imambargah Qadeemi after marching on its traditional routes.
Several small processions were also taken out from various Imambargahs ahead of the grand procession and were attended by a large number of mourners.
By deputing 2389 well-equipped Police Jawans, strict security arrangements were adopted under the supervision of City Police Officer (CPO) Azhar Hameed Khokher. Volunteers of Imamia Students Organization (ISO), Mukhtar Force and Imamia Organization also cooperated with police. Strict checking of vehicles and passersby was made at all entry and exit points of the city
In Rawalpindi, some activists of the ASWJ attempted to enter the main procession route several times in the day, but all their efforts were foiled by timely action of police and personnel of law-enforcement agencies.
Police resorted to tear-gas shelling, baton-charge and aerial firing at Pirwadhai and Faizabad to disperse the troublemakers who tried to block different roads after their failure to intercept the procession. As many as 30 people, including two policemen, were injured in the clashes.
The main Chehlum procession in Rawalpindi reached its end Point safely , while passing from its Previously determined Routes , and No Un due Incident was reported with the Participants of the Mourning Procession as they safely reached their Destination .
A heavy contingent of security officers was present in the area when armed Terrorist of SSP opened fire. It was reported that processionists in Rawalpindi tried to enter Islamabad but the police stopped them, which led to clashes.
While a clash was reported among a Handful of SSP Workers and security personnel in Rawalpindi’s Pirwadhai area which borders Islamabad. When The armed terrorist of SSP have reportedly forced shopkeepers to shut down their shops.
Police officers shelled the group in their attempt to disperse them. SSP Islamabad has also arrived in the area and arrested five suspects.
More security officers were called in from Islamabad to contain the mob in Rawalpindi and not allow them to enter the capital city.
Quetta , Balochistan
In Quetta, security forces thwarted a bid to attack processions when they arrested an alleged terrorist and recovered a huge cache of arms from a vehicle coming from Afghanistan.
Jammu & Kashmir
To mark the occasion, several programmes were organized across the Valley. The functions were organized by Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association, J&K Ittihad-ul-Muslimeen, J&K Anjuman-e-Shar-e-Shiaan, J&K Anjuman-e-Shar-e-Shiaan led by Aga Syed Muhammad Fazalullah Al-Safvi Al-Mosvi and others.
A daylong Majlis Chehlum was organised by Itihad-ul-Muslimeen at Chattabal Srinagar. The prominent Zakirs included Aga Syed Hassan, Muhammad Shafi, Khawaja, Maqsool Ali, Haji Ghulam Hassan, Syed Hassan Mosvi and others.
J&K Itthad-ul-Muslimeen Chief Patron, Moulana Abass Ansari, spoke about importance of the Karbala. Later a procession was taken out from Bemina Crossing which culminated at Masjid Sajjadiya Sajjadabad Chattabal, Srinagar.
A Majlis Chehlum was also organized by J&K Shia Association at Imam Bargah Zadiabal here. Thousands of devotees thronged the Imam Bargah Zadibal and participated in the prayers.
Latter J&K Shia Association General Secretary Abid Hussain Ansari took out a procession from Baba Mazar Zadibal to Gasiyar Chowk. The procession culminated at Imambargah Zadibal.
The Anjuman-e-Shar-e-Shiaan held a daylong Majlis at Hassanabad, Budgam in which devotees paid glowing tributes Karbala Martyrs.
J&K Anjuman-e-Shar-e-Shiaan Chief Patron, Aga Syed Hassan Mustaffa Safvi Al-mosvi, spoke about importance of Karbala Martyrs. Later processions were taken out from Zaildar Mohalla to Imambargah Hassanabad and also Astan Sharief Budgam to Imambargah Budgam.
Meanwhile the Anjuman-e-Shar-e-Shiaan led by Aga Syed Muhammad Fazalullah Al-Safvi Al-Mosvi held a daylong Majlis at Imambargah Ayatullah Yousuf (RA). Thousands of mourners attended the Majilis Chehlum.
Later a procession was taken out from Garipora Bemina which culminated at Khomeini Chowk Bemina.
Meanwhile, Chehlum-e-Hussaini (AS) was observed in Kargil. Braving bone chilling cold, a lare number of people participated in a procession.
The mourners passed through Islamia School Kargil and Khomini Chowkand. The procession concluded at Inqilab Manzil (Qatilgah-e-Hussaini) Kargil and Hussaini Park Kargil.
The processions were under the banner of Islamia School and IKMT Kargil. At Islamia School Kargil, Hojatul-Islam-wal-Muslimeen, Sheikh Amini delivered sermons explaining the importance of the day of Chehlum-e-Hussaini (AS).
Hojatul-Islam-wal-Muslimeen Aga Syed Mujtaba threw light on the philosophy of Karbala and termed Karbala as a mission for humanism to establish peace and prosperity in the world.
