JNN 28 July 2015 Lucknow : Prominent Shia cleric and Imam-e-Juma of Asafi mosque, Maulana Kalbe Jawwad, Brother of Prominent Shia Cleric Kalbe Sadiq was arrested along with several of his supporters for defying prohibitory orders and taking out a march on Monday.
Maulana Jawwad had announced the march in protest against the alleged corruption in the Shia Waqf Board. He had also demanded the removal of Syed Wasim Rizvi as chairman of the Board.
The march was to end at the Shahi Masjid in Hazratganj at 1 p.m., but the police resorted to lathicharge at Kaiserbagh and near Shubham picture hall in which many were injured.
Maulana Jawwad and others were arrested at the Kaiserbagh crossing and taken to Mohanjalganj in buses. Undeterred by his arrest, the Maulana announced that the protest would continue and said people would court arrest for the next five days.
Condemning the police action, the Maulana said the gate of the Shahi Masjid was locked by the district administration. “The namaazis were prevented from offering prayers,” he said. He said the protest was peaceful but the police resorted to lathicharge and arrested women and ulemas.
The Maulana said the Samajwadi Party government was working on the directives of the State Minority Welfare and Waqf Development Minister Mohammad Minister Azam Khan.
“The Chief Minister is a silent spectator”, Maulana Jawwad alleged. He accused the government of indulging in vote politics. The protest march was planned last week after the government refused to listen to his demand for removing Mr. Rizvi and instituting an inquiry, he said.
Apprehending trouble, prohibitory orders under Section 144 were clamped by the district administration with heavy security deployment all along the six-km route from Asafi Imambara to Hazratganj.
